Virtualization Software in the Classroom, Experiences from Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT)

Abstract: The advent of virtual technologies has been widely embraced by industry; it is now emerging as a tool in the academic environment.  It presents many opportunities across a range of disciplines but in particular computing and information systems studies could benefit enormously from its deployment.
The technology was introduced to GMIT in 2010 across a number of modules in the information systems and computer science disciplines.  It has presented both lecturers and students with many new scenarios for the examination of course material; which previously could only be examined by means of case study.  It has facilitated the examination of multiplatform solutions along with simulation of scalability without the need for expensive investment in new physical technologies.  
The experience to date has been mostly positive with feedback from students mentioning in particular the range of opportunities presented with respect to exploring project ideas.  Also the need to engage technical staff in reconfiguration of machines has been reduced significantly as the permissions and rights can be tailored for individual projects.  An issue of concern has been highlighted with respect to the management of software licence control; however the appropriate use of controls should ensure their proper management.
