The project “Sustainable Health Care“ combines scientific work from machine learning, signal processing, and sensor technology with medical issues. The goal was to improve and simplify diagnostics and thus reduce costs in the healthcare system. The Central Hospital Luxembourg and the Attica Psychiatric Hospital “Dromokaitio“ in Greece were involved as clinical research partners and challenge providers.
The project was divided into three phases: A transnational online lecture series on machine learning and diagnostics with the integration of medical expert lectures formed the theoretical basis. In international and interdisciplinary mixed teams, students developed solutions for medical partners to use widely available sensors, some of which are built into smartwatches, with new signal processing in diagnostics. In regular online sessions, lecturers from both universities evaluated the students progress.
During a one-week final conference in Greece, the student teams presented their solutions to the practice partners. These were then discussed in workshops, and initial outlines of ideas for further joint research projects with the clinical partners and for international theses were developed.
