"As a mentor, I particularly appreciate the opportunity to work directly with an independent researcher."

What exactly is your role and task as a academic mentor to Dr. Mohammed Al-Bared?

My main role is to discuss the results achieved by Mohammed and to reflect on them together. I also provide active support in writing publications. We also have intensive discussions about new research directions and possible developments.

What does day-to-day support look like and how time-consuming is your job?

We meet regularly, either weekly or every two weeks, to discuss results and plan the next steps. Mohammed works very independently, which makes it much easier for me to work with him.

What do you particularly like about your role as a mentor? Was there a special moment as a mentor that encouraged you in your decision? What were perhaps also challenges for you?

As a mentor, I particularly appreciate the opportunity to work directly with an independent researcher who deals intensively with issues that are also of great interest to me professionally. This has enabled me to gain valuable insights into the practical application of machine learning methods, for example.

How can academic mentors strengthen the academic career and integration of researchers at risk in Germany?

There are various ways in which mentors can provide support. These include establishing networks in the academic environment, advising on career opportunities and, of course, continuous academic exchange and support in publishing research results.

Would you volunteer as an academic mentor again? If yes, why so?

Yes, definitely. The collaboration, the scientific exchange and not least the personal contact have enriched me in many ways.
