“The future is WE - science, innovation, Rhineland-Palatinate” - that was the motto of the first state-wide Research Day of the universities of applied sciences (UAS) in Rhineland-Palatinate on June 25, 2024. The event was hosted by Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences at the Zweibrücken campus, where participants were able to experience an exhibition of scientific posters, exhibits and numerous lectures by researchers from the eight UAS in Rhineland-Palatinate from Bingen, Koblenz, Ludwigshafen, Mainz, Trier, Worms and Kaiserslautern.
The participants were presented with a whole kaleidoscope of diverse activities in research and artistic development that are carried out in Rhineland-Palatinate. The Vice Presidents for Research took up this image right at the beginning and presented lively and vivid impressions of research from the eight universities in an entertaining overview.
Afterwards, the focus was on the researchers themselves, many of whom had traveled to Trier University of Applied Sciences from the main campus, the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld and the Design Campus. Classic lectures, poster sessions and a variety of exhibits provided a lively and exciting picture of the Rhineland-Palatinate research landscape. In particular, the opportunities for exchange and networking furthered the event's goal of creating a dynamic and supportive research community.
Particularly pleasing: Clemens Hoch, Minister for Science and Health in Rhineland-Palatinate, presented the awards for the best posters in the evening, with Trier University of Applied Sciences being represented twice. In the Design category, Professor Harald Steber received the prize for his poster on plastic recycling in Togo. Klara Theobald and Anne Mich won first place in the Economy, Social Affairs & Society category for their poster on the use of reusable packaging in takeaway gastronomy. For his part, Minister Hoch did not return to the Ministry empty-handed: Prof. Dr. Karl-Herbert Schäfer, Vice President for Research at Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences, presented him with the conference proceedings, which are now also available online.
Professor te Heesen, Vice President for Research at Trier University of Applied Sciences, summarized: “The first joint research day of the universities of applied sciences in Rhineland-Palatinate has shown the close ties and cooperation between the universities of applied sciences in the state. We have strong expertise in the areas of research and transfer, from which the economy and society benefit both regionally and nationally.”
