From July 9th to July 15th, 2023, 16 students from eight different nations gathered at Trier University‘s Environmental Campus Birkenfeld to address the management of natural disasters.
In addition to preventive measures to minimize damage, the interdisciplinary Summer School led by Katharina Haupenthal and Prof. Dr. Fischer-Stabel also focused on alerting and risk communication. Using the example of the flood disaster in the Ahr valley, the complete Disaster Risk Management Cycle was presented in order to provide future decision-makers with the necessary knowledge in dealing with natural disasters.
In addition to the lecturers from the Trier University of Applied Sciences, experts from the German Committee for Disaster Reduction DKKV, the University of Heidelberg, the Koblenz University of Applied Sciences as well as stakeholders from the Ahr Valley had their say.
