Artificial Intelligence Models in Climate Change

In the winter semester of 2022, the Department of Computer Science welcomed the guest lecturer Dr. Coroiu from Babes Bolyai University in Romania. The contact with Dr. Coroiu was established through the organization of her lecture at the conference denominated „Computer Supported Education.“ During her visit to Trier University, she gave a lecture on „Artificial Intelligence Models in Climate Change,“ a course she designed for which she was awarded an industry prize.

The talk is relevant to our computer science community since Dr. Coroiu presented a concept to integrate student-centered projects into teaching. The project also applies AI methods that explore current climate and environment-related issues, thus aligning with the UN SDGs. At the beginning of the project, motivational presentations were given by specialists of climate and environment-related problem areas. Subsequently, the structure of the solution required AI technologies and tools, necessary data basis, and procedures developed by students, which were performed during the semester and presented to specialists in a final event.

In the future, a similar project may be developed at Trier University, possibly a transnational one with the Romanian Babes-Bolyai University. In the run-up to the visit, an Erasmus agreement was concluded with the Romanian university to facilitate further cooperation through lecturer and foster student exchanges which may follow immediately after the visit. During her visit, Dr. Coroiu had intensive discussions
with the department‘s AI initiative colleagues. Likewise, contacts were made for collaboration in the field of robotics. Further joint activities in these areas are planned. A lecture by a professor of the computer science department from Trier at the Romanian university is already firmly planned for January. This is to be the prelude to further joint activities.

The Department of Computer Science was ranked number 1 among Romanian computer science faculties by „QS.“. In addition, Babes-Bolyai University offers courses in German, which is another point of contact for joint ventures, but also for exchanges of teachers and students.
