Funding opportunities for Researchers at Risk

Trier University of Applied Sciences supports Researchers at Risk in continuing their academic career

Academic freedom must be protected at all costs. Even in times of crisis, safe research must always be guaranteed. As one of the largest and most research-intensive universities in Rhineland-Palatinate, Trier University of Applied Sciences is committed to the safety and freedom of researchers and offers them protection for their work.

Funding by the Philipp Schwartz Initiative - Endangered scientist comes to Trier

For the first time, Trier University of Applied Sciences has been given the opportunity to award a two-year research fellowship as part of the Philipp Schwartz Initiative, receiving one of a total of 26 available grants out of 91 nominations from universities in Germany. The Philipp Schwartz Initiative gives German universities and research institutions the opportunity to host at-risk researchers as part of a fellowship. “We are delighted to welcome a Philipp Schwartz Fellow for the first time. As an open-minded university, it is important to us to stand up for the freedom of science and to give persecuted researchers a safe place to continue their scientific careers. With their diverse perspectives and experiences, they contribute to innovation in science and teaching. The Philipp Schwartz Initiative offers us an ideal platform for this,” says Prof. Dr. Henrik te Heesen, Vice President for Research.

Dr. Mohammed Al-Bared from Yemen has been a guest at Trier University of Applied Sciences since 2022 and is researching artificial intelligence and AI-supported predictions of flood events in small river basins in the Department of Computer Science. As one of the few experts in this multidisciplinary field, Dr. Al-Bared is investigating the uncertainties of AI-generated predictions in particular and has made a significant contribution to the recent intensification of these research activities at Trier University of Applied Sciences. He recently presented his findings at the International LARSIM User Workshop 2024 in Luxembourg. Find out more about his experiences in the interview with Dr. Al-Bared and his scientific mentor Prof. Dr. Beise.
