W2-Professorship for Digital product development

The following position is available in the Department of Environmental Planning/Environmental Technology at the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld as of 01 September 2025:

For this professorship, we are looking for a committed person who will ensure and expand the range of courses offered by the Department of Environmental Planning/Environmental Engineering (UPUT) for the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in the above-mentioned field of mechanical engineering.

The applicant is expected to have proven scientific competence and proven practical experience in the following area:

  • Digital product development in CAD

Further knowledge and skills in the following fields

  • Product lifecycle management
  • Simulation (FEM, MKS, AR/VR)
  • Topology optimisation

are appreciated.

A research focus in the field of digital product development with an interdisciplinary link to a research focus at the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld, such as the research topic of additive manufacturing, is desirable.

The applicant should have completed a degree in the field of mechanical engineering or a related degree programme with a focus on the above-mentioned requirements. German language skills at level C2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and very good English language skills are required. In addition, a willingness to take on interdisciplinary basic courses in the department (e.g. mathematics, machine elements) and to teach courses in English is required.

The mentoring concept represented by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and Trier University of Applied Sciences, as well as the expected commitment to application-oriented research, requires a high level of presence of the teaching staff at the university location.

In addition to the general labour law requirements, the recruitment requirements include at least

  1. a successfully completed university degree in the field of mechanical engineering or a related degree programme with a specialist focus on the above-mentioned requirements,
  2. pedagogical aptitude,
  3. a special aptitude for scientific work, which is usually demonstrated by a qualified doctorate, and
  4. in addition, special achievements in the application or further development of scientific knowledge and methods in at least five years of relevant professional practice, of which at least three years must have been spent outside the university sector.

The appointment is made as a civil servant for life if the relevant legal requirements are met.
