Awareness: Switching from Windows 10 to Windows 11

Microsoft will discontinue support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025.

From this date, there will no longer be any security updates for Windows 10 (this applies to all editions) unless you participate in the Microsoft Extended Security Update (ESU) programme for a fee. The use of devices with Windows 10 without an ESU contract in the university's networks will then no longer be permitted. Please check in good time whether new devices may need to be purchased, as not all hardware is suitable for running Windows 11. The Microsoft PC Health Check app provides the relevant information.

Devices that are no longer suitable for operation with Windows 11 can continue to be operated with a Linux operating system and can therefore be used for even longer. This may make it possible to avoid purchasing new equipment in some places. This saves money and is sustainable. The IT departement in Trier recommends the use of the Linux distribution Ubuntu in the LTS edition and offers corresponding support for devices used for business purposes. It is particularly worth a try for standard workstations that do not have any special software requirements.
