1 What characterises studying architecture in Trier? Why did you choose to study in Trier?
I decided to study at Trier University of Applied Sciences because the application process was straightforward - without a portfolio or NC. Trier is also not too far from my home town of Bonn, which was another plus point for me.
Right from the start, the university endeavoured to promote exchange between students. Even during the coronavirus lockdown, a close bond developed during our semester, which made it much easier to start studying.
Trier University of Applied Sciences offers a familiar atmosphere overall. The close contact between students and lecturers creates a personal learning environment in which you quickly feel welcome and can network well.
2. Is there a particular project or moment in your studies that you particularly like to remember?
I have particularly fond memories of the great people I was able to get to know. For me, Trier is an ideal city for studying and partying.
One project that I particularly remember is a construction law project from the 6th semester. The four of us were very free in our assignment and designed a modular emergency shelter for refugees to be placed on escape routes. To our great delight, the project won several awards, which makes us very proud.
3 What did you do after graduating?
After completing my Bachelor's degree, I wanted to gain practical experience abroad. I first completed a six-month internship in Barcelona and then worked in Basel for a further year. The time in Barcelona in particular was incredibly intensive and formative - both professionally and personally. I can therefore only recommend going abroad to everyone!
4. how did you come up with the idea of applying to Harvard, what were the admission criteria and what do you hope to learn and experience there?
I was very impressed by some of the published work by students. I was also fascinated by the campus with the iconic Gund Hall. In addition, the GSD (Graduate School of Design - Harvard University) has a great history and has very well-known professors today and in the past. During my internships, I had the opportunity to meet GSD students, and their stories and their skills finally convinced me to apply.
However, I had underestimated how time-consuming the application process is. In addition to several letters of motivation and recommendation, you need a portfolio, language and qualification tests and detailed proof of previous achievements.
5. What advice can you give to anyone who is studying or wants to study in Trier?
Be courageous and go your own way. Not every piece of advice and not every assignment has to be followed slavishly. If something seems important to you in your projects, then stick to it and pursue your ideas consistently.
Personally, I focussed on the things that interested me the most. I went on a lot of excursions, gained practical experience and took part in competitions outside the university.
