Ukrainian Embroidery x Laser Cut and Engraving
In developing my prototype, I drew inspiration from part of the vast field of Ukrainian embroidery, which is still deeply rooted in the culture and tradition of Ukraine and continues to be practiced there by hand. Instead of using linen and red or black embroidery thread, I wanted to use the modern technique of laser cutting and engraving to translate this ancient tradition into a neo-folkloric textile look made of various imitation leather.
My basic idea was to transfer the essence of the "cutworks" from the Ukrainian region of Poltava into the "modern form" of cutting and to take my theme of "Ukrainian embroidery" in a visually and haptically different direction. However, the connection to the original, fascinating and beautiful tradition should remain recognizable.
