Three students from the Nagaoka Institute of Design, accompanied by their professor Kayoko Komatsu, visited the Idar-Oberstein campus and the Jakob Bengel industrial monument on 26 September.

The delegation from Japan, consisting of a total of five students and two professors, held a workshop on "Haiku and Photography" at the Paulusplatz site of the Design Campus in Trier on 24 and 25 September, in which students from various disciplines were able to participate. The Institute of Design in Nagaoka has been a partner university of Trier University of Applied Sciences for several years. Co-operation projects and delegation visits take place on a regular basis. It is also possible to spend a semester abroad at the other university.

After the group had already been able to get to know the city of Trier and the premises of the Trier university site at the beginning of their stay in Germany, they visited the Idar-Oberstein Campus at the end of their trip to get an impression of the stone and jewellery workshops and to take a look at some of the final projects in the "Gemstone and Jewellery" department. They were supervised by Eva-Maria Kollischan, Professor of Artistic Foundations, and Helena Renner, PR Assistant.

After the tour of the campus, they visited the Jakob Bengel industrial monument in the Oberstein district, a former jewellery and chain factory. Gina Müller, MFA student in Idar-Oberstein, who is responsible for public relations at the Jakob Bengel Foundation, took them on a tour of the factory premises and showed them the machines used to produce the chains and jewellery parts. They then visited the exhibition "Brooches in dialogue between the past and the avant-garde" at Villa Bengel, which was created in collaboration with former students of the department.

Hanako Kobayashi, professor at the Nagaoka Institute of Design, is part of the exhibition "Rai-Zen-Da" at the European Academy of Art in Trier, which is on show until 27 October 2024.
