As part of the Joya Barcelona fair that occurs once a year, we grant one student the dterra award. The dterra award was born out of our continuing commitment to support and promulgate contemporary arts crafts. It is aimed at students of all ages and nationalities who are exploring new ways of using, modifying and applying different materials in an innovative but crafted way. The winner receives a fortnight's stay in out studio in Sant Cugat, including use of the workshop, the materials and mentoring at dterra.
This year the jury of the dterra award (Laura Jener, Roberta Ferreira and Judy McCaig) has chosen Natascha Frechen of Hochschule Trier Campus Idar-Oberstein. We found that Natascha ́s work explores and innovates the use of a traditional material with extreme skills. Using agate, a very hard stone, she managed to achieve a perception of great lightness and movement. We have also been impressed by the poetic way in which she has resolved the mechanisms, joining stone and metal using tension as the only union.
Welcome to dterra, Natascha.
