Students from the Gemstones and Jewellery Campus in Idar-Oberstein had the unique opportunity to take part in a very special workshop in Tallinn: Iron Casting.
The two-week workshop has been held once a year for 10 years at the Estonian Academy of Arts (EKA) in Tallinn, Estonia. Wax models are prepared for casting using the ceramic shell process (lost wax casting) and sand casting moulds are made. The iron comes from Soviet radiators, which the participants have to smash into small pieces in order to melt them down in the blast furnace (Kõrgahi). On the penultimate day of the workshop, the actual casting takes place - Malmivalu.
This year, about 50 students from 20 nations participated in the workshop. They made about 100 moulds and 800 kg of iron were cast. On the last day, the cast models could be released from the moulds and taken home.
