Time plays a central role in Felicia Mülbaier's sculptural works and drawings. The artist builds up and removes, creating fleeting testimonies of time in an artistic dialogue with the material. The starting point for her work is often an irregularly shaped lump of material, which she removes layer by layer without knowing in advance what lies beneath. Every decision in the process must be made spontaneously, as no step can be undone - the transitional stages are completely destroyed and dissolved into their basic components.
The 18 objects, the "talismans", appear archaic and magical. Petrified wood that has survived for thousands of years is not shaped, but something is uncovered from within that seems to be just waiting to be discovered. The works are extremely fragile and symbolic, they convey a fragility and fleetingness that visualises both the time in the material and the process of working. They are testimonies in stone to an intuitive sculptural instinct.
Removing the material without knowing the core requires inner calm and an open mind. During the creative process, time seems to disappear and is simultaneously omnipresent in the material and in the artistic endeavour. In this way, the process reveals something primal and promotes a deeper understanding of the different temporal levels of our existence. The time contained in the petrified wood and the time required for uncovering its inner substance combine to form a coherent unity that traces the path from the original form to a reduced, residual object.
The competition for the State Awards for Design, Arts and Crafts and the State Exhibition of Arts and Crafts takes place every two years.
