"Hi!
We are Astonish, an international collective at the moment consisting of five female makers. We met in the misty and magical valley of Idar-Oberstein. Since its foundation ASTONISH has been a platform for artists from different backgrounds –from around ten different countries –but with the same language: jewellery.
Every year for SCHMUCK we give ourselves a new topic to which we develop a piece or a seriesof pieces. This year we were looking for fun, we made questionnaires to ourselves, we wondered which piece of jewellery we would be, we set out to play with jewellery but we felt we were not there yet. However, when we came up with the fairy tale of The Emperor's New Clothes, which is about the imaginary clothes a king is wearing, we started a process of reimagining and reinventing boxes and the jewellery they would contain. In the process we were questioning: what is the box–for jewellery and for us–? How doesitlook? What doesitbring with the piece? Doesitprotect or hide something? How precious isitand what comes within/alongside withthe box? This also made us think about the joy wefeel when weopen a box and look inside. Could the box have more meanings? In this exhibition you will find five very different interpretations and paths how OUTOF THE BOXcan be seen and experienced. We invite you topass by anddiscoverour work and get infatuated with us.
Let’s get Astonished!
Love,
The Ladies from ASTONISH"
